Burnley and West Brom played to a 2-2 draw last weekend
in a bit of fog at Turf Moor Stadium, as you can see in the photo, but that’s
nothing compared to the Boxing Day 1992 match between West Brom and Chester.

All’s clear

| Not a cloud in the sky. |
Like
most of you, my life is super busy. So much so, I rarely get a chance to update
The Rainout Blog for the seven people who visit this blog. (That number may be
a bit inflated.)
Often,
a sports/weather event will occur or be forecasted – remember: Game 3 of the
ALDS was rained out – and I’ll cringe just a little because there’s no time to
grab the laptop and write a post and share a photo or two.
Today,
I have a little free time. So, what’s happening? Nothing.
Weather
in Kansas City for the first two games of the World Series have been perfect.
We
have Thursday night NFL action in Denver, where it looks like there will be a better
chance of Peyton Manning NOT adding to his touchdown record than there is a
chance of rain drops or snowflakes – you never know in Denver.
The
low in the Mile High city tonight will be around 48. It’ll be a little chilly,
but it shouldn’t be enough to affect Manning’s performance. He’s not a cold-weather
quarterback, ya know?
There are
a couple of college football games scheduled for tonight. Miami travels to
Blacksburg for an ACC showdown – more likely a “letdown” for the home team – with
Virginia Tech. Temps will dip to the mid 40s, which is about as cold as the
Hokies’ offense.
You’ll
see about the same weather conditions in Greenville, North Carolina if you tune
into tonight’s East Carolina home game with Connecticut. (Why would you do
that?)
And you
know what? Sunday’s NFL slate looks pretty unspectacular too, meaning no rain,
no mud, no snow, no fog… no nothin’.

Friday Football Forecasts

When
it comes to bad weather football games, I’m more of a fan of rain than snow. I get
it: snow looks nice and it’s sort of fun, for a while, to watch the players
slip, slide and fumble around the field.
It’s
all great. But to me, nothing beats a good gully washer of a rain storm. I love
watching games were rain is pouring down on the players and fans are getting soaked.
It’s
not likely well see anything that dramatic this weekend, but rain showers are
forecasted for many of the NFL cities. And for you snow fans, there is mention
of the white stuff for games in Kansas City and, of course, Green Bay, where if you look right now (2:20 p.m., Friday, Dec. 20, 2013), you’ll see Lambeau is
already covered.
So,
without further gibberish – I love that word – here are your forecasts for this
week’s 14 NFL outdoor games.
Dolphins
at Bills: High of 51/Rain
Colts at Chiefs: High of 25/Chance of light snow
Vikings
at Bengals: High of 58/Rain likely
Cowboys
at Redskins: High of 73 (Wow! In December?) / Showers likely
Browns
at Jets: High of 64/chance of showers (And a good chance Geno will turn the
ball over at least three times.)
Saints
at Panthers: High of 73/Showers
Titans
at Jaguars: High of 81/Patchy fog (I’d love to see another Fog Bowl, but not
for the Titans and Jags.)
Broncos
at Texans: High of 68/Mostly sunny (If Peyton Manning stinks this week –that’s
unlikely against the two-win Texans – no one can blame the temperature.)
Cardinals
at Seahawks: High of 48/Rain likely (Great! I love the look of the Seahawks
playing at home in the rain.)
Steelers
at Packers: High 25/Snow (The low for Green Bay Sunday night is -3. Burrrrr!)
Raiders
at Chargers: High of 67/Sunny
Patriots
at Ravens: High 71/showers likely
Sunday Night
Bears at Eagles: Low of 33/Showers likely (The high in Philly Sunday should hit around 71.)
Bears at Eagles: Low of 33/Showers likely (The high in Philly Sunday should hit around 71.)
Falcons at 49ers: Low of 48/Mostly clear
-- rain --

All the elements
It's the
time of year when we can see a lot of different weather types affect our
outdoor (sometimes indoor) sporting events.
Last week, when I was spending a
little time recapping the snowy NFL games from the previous Sunday, my pal, Chad, sent me a link to this
web page, which contains 30 superb photos of NFL games being played in
snow, rain, mud, fog and... well, that's about it.

Crank the Fog Machine to 11, Boys!
I was telling someone the other day that my second favorite non-sunny day weather event – second to rain, of course – is fog. And you know what, I don't write often enough about fog. Perhaps that's because there aren't that many sporting events that take place in those low-lying stratus clouds. Trust me; I look for those stories all the time. There isn't much there.
So, I'll gladly take a story featuring fake fog, especially when there's hilarious video – and an ever cooler close-up photo – of college football players falling all over themselves after tripping over a fog machine. That's what happened Saturday when Mississippi State took the field for its season opener. Saturday Down South has the video.
By the way, the Bulldogs managed to pick themselves off the turf, clear their eyes and deliver a 56-9 beat down to Jackson State.

Did The Beatles Ever Sing about Foggy Nights in Liverpool?
You are
looking live, sort of, at foggy Anfield, where today – tonight in Liverpool – the
Reds host mighty Tottenham.
Well, "mighty"
may be a bit of a stretch for the Premier League's third place side, but Hot Spur are having a nice run this season.
Anyway, the
match, which I hope to catch glimpses of as I work today in The Rainout Blog
satellite office, should be fun if the fog continues to hover along the
pitch.
By the way,
the neat photo above is from the Liverpool Facebook page.
Speaking
of Premier League social media pages, Manchester City posted on its Facebook site a nifty gallery of Saturday's beautiful snowy scene at The Etihad Stadium Saturday.
I watched some of the match live and caught
more of the visuals later that night on replay. I particularly enjoyed watching
grounds crew members shovel snow away from the penalty areas.
If anyone was at the match and took
photos you'd like to share with the – uh,hm – many, many Rainout Blog readers please send those my way.

Answer Still Foggy
On Tuesday, I posted a brief story centered on an Associated Press photo of a recent FIFA Club World Cup soccer match in Japan between Auckland FC and Kashiwa Reysol. The caption mentioned that fog shrouded Toyota Stadium at the point the photo was taken.
Indeed, it looks like fog, and, who am I to question the AP?
However, no story I read about the match mentioned fog, but one story did mention a pre-match fireworks display. So I asked: was it fog or smoke from the fireworks?
Keep in mind: I know this isn’t super important and no one really gives rats arse either way. But this is a sports weather blog, so I thought I’d take a crack and uncovering the truth. You know… just for fun.
I sent out a few Tweets and emails and then yesterday received this email from Auckland FC Media Manager Gordon Glen Watson:
Hi,
I was there, and my first impression was the 'mist' was from the fireworks display of the short opening ceremony.
However, as the match progressed, the mercury fell and the argument for fog probably becomes stronger.
To be honest, there was no way to be 100% completely sure.
There was steam coming off the players, so that's also an indicator.
The fireworks display wasn't that grandiose, although the roof was closed over the pitch, so who can tell.
The focus was mainly on the football, although I did hear journalists from abroad ask whether it was fog or smoke.
Let me know when you find out!
Cheers,
Gordon
Ok, we’re not any closer to knowing the answer, but as I said, it’s really not important, just fun.
Big thanks to Watson for taking the time from his busy schedule to reply to my email at – I hope my math is correct – approximately 11:23 p.m. on a Friday night.

Fog or Fireworks?
![]() |
| Is it fog or smoke from a pre-match fireworks display covering the pitch during a recent match at Toyota Stadium? Who knows? |
"Fog shrouds the Toyota Stadium where Auckland FC plays Kashiwa Reysol during the playoff for the quarterfinal at the FIFA Club World Cup soccer in Toyota, near Nagoya, central Japan, Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011. (AP Photo/Shuji Kajiyama)"
You know how I love foggy playing fields, so I had to post the pic.
While doing a little research for a brief story to accompany the photo, I found no reference to foggy playing conditions during Kashiwa Reysol’s 2-0 over their opening round opponents from New Zealand.
However, a match review on the FIFA website noted:
"The action was preceded by an opening ceremony that culminated with some deafening fireworks, but there was nothing particularly explosive during an untidy opening to the match itself."
So, was it fog or smoke from the fireworks display shrouding Toyota Stadium last Thursday?
Anyone out there know the answer?
This may be
The Rainout Blog’s first attempt at investigative journalism… or first attempt
at journalism, period.

Hazy in Huskieville
It's a bit foggy in DeKalb, Ill., tonight, and the fog is not working as a home field advantage for Northern Illinois. The homestanding Huskies trail Central Michigan 30-6 with 2:50 to play in the third quarter. No photos have hit the Web yet, but I'm sure plenty of pics will pop up soon. Hey, instead of waiting for me to post photos of the fog fest, why not watch the live action on ESPN 2?
Update: Northern Illinois just put eight points on the board with a touchdown and two-point conversion. The Huskies trail now 30-14 and just recovered an onsides kick with seconds to play in the third frame.
Update II: The fog is getting thick enough to force ESPN 2 to use field-level cameras instead of the traditional broad shot. If the atmospheric conditions aren't enough excitement, the hometown Huskies are making a heck of a comeback, trailing 30-27 midway through fourth quarter.

Skiing and Wind Don't Mix, I'm Told
While we're on the subject of wind (see below), I should mention that the competitors at the women's super-G felt a bitter, biting cold breeze in Sestriere, Italy on Sunday. Andrea Fischbacher of Austria and Fabienne Suter of Switzerland shared victory in the event that, as the Associated Press wrote, "was shaped by varying wind and several crashes."Fog was the culprit (as you can see in the photo here) at the World Cup Freestyle Skiing Moguls in West Vancouver, British Columbia Saturday. The event was suspended as fog grew heavier. Speaking of heavy fog, check out this photo of a man laboring near the National Olympic Stadium in fog in Beijing, China. The photo was taken in December.

Six and Done
I've posted five items here today – Oops, this one makes six – and I think I need to quit for a while and concentrate on a few other things. I have a couple other stories I could get to today, but I think I'll save those for later. Hey, I may post tonight if my wife leaves me alone long enough. Don't tell her I said that. That said, I'll leave you with this uber cool photo of the Bengals' kicker Shane Graham doing his thing in an intense fog. Good night sports/weather fans – both of you! Enjoy the cold, possibly rainy ALCS tonight, and Go Tribe!

Brewers - Cubs Begin Play After Delay
It's cold, wet and foggy in Chicago, but the Brewers and Cubs finally are underway after an hour-long rain delay. The game is the finale of the three-game set, and the Brew Crew is aiming for a sweep. As the game began a few moments ago, Brewers play-by-play man Bob Uecker said he could not tell which direction the wind was blowing because the fog had just dipped below the outfield flag. Uecker isn't expecting conditions to get any better as the game progresses, saying, "The second half of today's game is going to be the Iditarod."
Last night's game between the two National League Central rivals ended with a steady rain falling on Wrigley. This AP photo shows the Cubbies' Cliff Floyd whiffing at strike three during a downpour to end the game and give the Brewers a 4-1 victory. Milwaukee leads the Central by three games over the Cincinnati Reds. The Cubs are in last place, six games back.
